Chatham, the company that makes these stones, has perfected the process of growing ruby crystals over decades, taking six months to a year to complete a crystal. The process begins with a naturally occurring seed of Burmese ruby, which creates an environment rich in chromium, resulting in the vivid red colour of the crystals'

A slice of an earth-mined crystal is placed in a crucible chamber, which is then filled with a liquid that contains the necessary ingredients for crystal growth. This liquid can only exist at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius and is sealed in the chamber for six months to a year until it grows into a perfectly clear crystal.
