Time travel has been at the heart of science fiction for as long as many of us can remember. There’s something deeply exciting—and let’s be honest, kind of chaotic—about the idea of skipping across centuries, rewriting history, or accidentally messing with timelines. And no matter how complex or quirky the rules, time travel stories have gifted geek culture some of the most iconic characters and worlds ever imagined.

For me, it’s more than just entertainment. Time travel stories are packed with big emotions, fascinating tech, and moments that stay with you. And when you start talking time travellers, there are a couple of names that loom large in the fandom world.

Doctor Who: The Time Lord That Started It All (For Many of Us)

There is no talking about time travellers in pop culture without tipping your hat (or sonic screwdriver) to Doctor Who. First aired in 1963, this British sci-fi legend has become an undeniable part of geek culture. The Doctor, a shape-shifting alien known as a Time Lord, travels across time and space in the iconic blue police box we all know and love: the TARDIS. And while the series started before my time, it's impossible not to be swept up in its legacy.

What makes the Doctor such a standout figure in sci-fi is that each regeneration brings something new to the table—different personalities, different quirks, but always the same beating heart (or two). The show’s clever writing, fearless approach to change, and emotional core have kept it going for decades. And let’s be real, the fandom is absolutely next-level. From conventions to cosplay to a million inside jokes, being a Whovian means being part of something wonderfully weird and heartfelt.

Stargate: A Time Travel Fandom with Ancient Roots

While Doctor Who gave us whimsical cosmic travel, Stargate brought in a totally different vibe—one part military sci-fi, one part ancient mythology, and one big wormhole of fun.

Starting with the 1994 film and exploding into Stargate SG-1, this franchise built a universe where humans could travel to other planets using ancient alien tech. While Stargate wasn’t always about time travel, it gave us some brilliant time travel episodes across its various series—SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe. Whether it was alternate timelines, future versions of Earth, or jumping into the past to fix a catastrophic mistake, the Stargate crew never passed up the chance to twist the clock.

For fans, Stargate is a goldmine. You’ve got witty banter (looking at you, Jack O’Neill), lovable and brilliant characters (hello, Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson), and an evolving mythology that somehow made ancient Egypt, advanced alien tech, and time loops all make perfect sense. Of course, the list of beloved time travellers doesn’t end with the Doctor and the Stargate teams. From sci-fi novels to anime to blockbuster movies, we’ve had a whole parade of brave (and sometimes bumbling) timeline-hoppers. Whether it’s characters stuck in time loops, rebels trying to rewrite a dark future, or scientists dealing with the fallout of their own inventions, time travel has always given writers a way to tell deeper stories—about loss, change, and what it means to take control of your destiny.

But when I think about what keeps pulling me back to time travel stories, it’s the same feeling every time: wonder. The idea that anything—past, present, or future—can be part of the journey.
