🌋 Born in Volcanoes: The Amazing Story of Peridot
If you've ever seen a beautiful green gemstone that seems to glow in the sunlight, chances are it was a peridot.
I absolutely love this gemstone because it's unlike almost anything else you'll find in nature. While many gems come in a rainbow of colours, peridot has one signature look—that gorgeous fresh green that's instantly recognizable.
As August's birthstone, peridot has been treasured for thousands of years, and like so many gemstones, it's surrounded by incredible stories, myths, and legends. ☀️ The Gem of the Sun
One of my favourite stories about peridot comes from Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians adored this gemstone so much that they called it the "Gem of the Sun." They believed its brilliant green glow could protect against evil spirits and bring happiness and good fortune to the person wearing it.
Legend even says that some of Cleopatra's famous emerald collection may actually have included peridot! Historians still debate the claim, but it's a fun reminder that gemstones have been confusing people for centuries.
🌙 It Glows After Sunset
Here's a fun fact I didn't know until I started learning more about gemstones—peridot doesn't lose its sparkle when the sun goes down.
Because of the way it reflects light, it can seem to glow beautifully by candlelight. This earned it the nickname "Evening Emerald."
I think that's such a romantic name. It sounds like something straight out of a fantasy novel!
🌋 Born From Fire
Unlike many gemstones that form deep underground over millions of years, peridot is created in the Earth's upper mantle and reaches the surface through volcanic activity.
That's right... this gorgeous green gemstone has literally travelled to us inside molten rock.
How cool is that?
Some rare peridot has even been discovered inside meteorites, meaning a tiny number of these gems are technically older than Earth itself.
If that doesn't earn fantasy-level bragging rights, I don't know what does.
🌺 Hawaiian Legends
Peridot also appears in Hawaiian folklore.
Some stories say the bright green crystals represent the tears of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire. According to legend, her tears became beautiful green gemstones scattered across the volcanic landscape.
Whether taken literally or simply appreciated as mythology, it's another wonderful example of how people have looked at gemstones with awe and imagination throughout history.
