Amethyst, the birthstone of February

Amethyst, the birthstone of February

Amethyst is the birthstone of February & is the world's most popular purple gem. It is the purple color variety of quartz that has been used in personal adornment for over 2000 years. Because it's the birthstone of February, the month of Valentine's Day, its often assotiated with love.

The spiritual meaning of Amethyst is groundedness, tranquility, and calm. The literal meaning of Amethyst is “not intoxicated” – its name translates from the Greek word améthystos.

Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light lavender or pale violet to a deep purple. Amethyst may exhibit one or both secondary hues, red and blue. High-quality amethyst can be found in Canada, Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Far East. Most popular shade is a dark purple. The pale colors were once considered undesirable, but have recently become popular due to intensive marketing.
